Prized by Egyptian pharaohs, Roman emperors, Turkish sultans, and Russian tsars, emeralds are one of the most vivid gemstones in the age of man.

Thanks to the depth of their color, emeralds have become a real talisman in the Middle East, since green is a sacred color in that culture.

Uncover the secrets of these well-regarded assets and learn why you should be wearing them.

WHERE AN EMERALD IS BORN

Together with diamonds, emeralds are one of the very few gems that come from the Earth's mantle.

In fact, in the historical moments in which the earth's crust moves, the rocks from the mantle are pushed upwards, transporting the peridots contained in them. This alone has contributed to feeding numerous legends.

It is no wonder the impressive etymology of emeralds encompasses Middle English, Latin, Greek, and Semitic roots, meaning sparkle and scintillation.

ORIGIN OF EMERALDS

Emeralds are a variety of beryl, which is transparent when pure. Chemical traces of chromium oxide will give beryl the rich green we can recognize so well.

Most emeralds come from Colombia, where they are found in sedimentary rocks.

In geological terms, gemstone imperfections are called inclusions. The goal is to maximize the vivid green in this gemstone while protecting it from further inclusions.

To accomplish that, the famous rectangular cut with lapidated corner works as the best projection for emeralds’ maximum brilliance and color.

The cut is even used for other gemstones and diamonds, but the moniker has stuck as the “emerald cut”.

WHAT ARE SOME FAMOUS EMERALDS?

The number of historic jewels to have survived wars and pillages is heartbreaking, but emeralds make their way into the rarest and richest we have left of ancient times.

Dating from the 16th century Colombia, the Crown of the Andes showcases the oldest collection of emeralds in the same relic. Created to celebrate delivery from a plague in 1590, making the crown a powerful religious symbol. More than 24 goldsmiths worked on this crown. It can be appreciated at the MET Museum, New York.

An estimated item of the Palace Museum in Turkey, the Topkapi dagger was crafted in the 18th century as a diplomatic gift for a prince. The most interesting detail about the dagger are the three staggering emeralds on the handle in different shapes and with incredible shine making them the most priceless emeralds of our time.

DID YOU KNOW?

Ancient Romans believed that when a person wore emerald stones, their soul was restored.

Perhaps the most ardent supporter of emeralds, Cleopatra adored these jewels. She presented dignitaries with a great representation of herself carved in large emeralds.
